Track Star Really "SHINES" for Vigor
Friday, October 23, 2009

Jonathan Rutlege shines on and off the field for Vigor!  We hear so much negative reports about teens today, but we never get to really read or hear the good!  There are still good teens in this country today.  We are proud to call Jonathan one of ours!

The following story is from the WPMI website who interviewed Jonathan after this event.

He's fast and his speed made all the difference in catching what appeared to be a run-away thief. Police say thanks to local high school track star they got their man. It all happened at the Tillman's corner Wal-Mart Tuesday night.

It should have been a normal night of grocery shopping, "All of a sudden I see this man with a buggy and he's running with it," says Jonathan Rutlege, a Vigor High School track star who saw and chased the man in the parking lot. Store security and six employees were all trying to catch up with a man who police say had a buggy full of stolen merchandise.

"I knew he had speed, I knew he was fast but you know I'm a mother and he's my only child and I was like what's going to happen when he actually catches this guy," says Jan Rutlege, Jonathan's mother.

Looking back she says she wouldn't have wanted her son to take action, but it was instinct for this young man to want to help and to take off running. There's a reason his team mates call him "Blade." "Sometimes if you feel you can make a difference and help out in a situation you just do it, " says his mother.
